I received this book in my NerdyBookworm Box and you have no idea how excited I was when I opened my box to find it there. I am a huge fan of V.E.Schwab and this is one of my anticipated reads of the year .

This Savage Song is set in a world where there is no where safe to live in the city. It is overrun with monsters and people live in constant fear. Kate Harker and August Flynn are heirs to a divided city and each has to decide what is best for not only themselves but for the city they call home. This story is dark, mysterious and action-packed. It worth every second I spent counting waiting impatiently for the release date.

This book had everything I expect from a Schwab book. A strong female protagonist, a sweet guy and lots of action. I loved the main characters. Kate is a human who tries to act like a monster in order to please her dad and August is a monster who is trying to human. It sounds a little cliche but it’s written perfectly. The characters are so likable that I couldn’t help but want to be Kate’s best friend and wrap August in a hug and protect him from the world. However, like Schwab’s past books there was very little romance which I think is so refreshing in a YA book. I always feel the romance can often take over the story, especially with all the love triangles about. This book, however, focused on the characters and how they thought they fitted into this dark world.

If you haven’t read this book yet I highly recommend it. The part that drew me into the plot the most were the monsters. There are three types of monsters; Corsai, Malchai and Sunai. Each have different qualities and come into existence after a violent act occurs. This idea that monsters are born after some carries out a violent act is such a unique idea. I love it! It is the perfect metaphor of crime. The monsters could be a physical representation of the criminals soul after they go against society and indulge in violence.

Schwab can definitely write unique and interesting stories. I have never read anything like this and I can’t wait to read the next installment. Have you read This Savage Song yet?

  2. I haven’t read ANY Schwab books yet.. (omg please, put the pitch forks away) but I hear some pretty good stuff about this. I don’t read many books about monsters so it’d definitely be a good change.

    1. She is a really great writer. To be honest I have only recently started reading her books and that was because she was a part of my YALC reading list.
